You have decided to attend the open day for your child sixth form college and are wondering what you should expect. First of all, congratulations because attending a college open day is an excellent way for you to learn about your child’s new school. Open days are events where you are able not only to learn about the school but also ask questions about any concerns that you may have.
The open day will start promptly as directed on the leaflet or the website so make sure that you are there ahead of time. Parents, prospective students and other guests will be invited to have a snack after which the principal will give a speech highlighting the main attributes of the school as well as the subjects that children can choose from once they start their sixth form studies. There will also be a talk about careers – you will be given a general outline as to which subjects students should study to prepare them for the sciences, business, arts and more.
Afterwards you may be invited to go around the school and have a look at the amenities. If your child has an interest in a particular sport or art make sure that they are catered for – some schools are very specific about the extracurricular activities that they offer. You may also be given a chance to talk briefly with the teachers. Find out which ones in particular will work with your child and ask them about their teaching style and what kind of support they provides.
